Night of Excellence is an awards banquet in which the hard work and dedication Manitowoc County high school athletes, coaches, and teams put forth each year is honored and recognized. The banquet will be held at Knox's Silver Valley, in Manitowoc, on July 12, 2017.
Night of Excellence Awards
Male and Female Commitment to Excellence Scholarship
The Commitment to Excellence Scholarships are awarded to one male and one female high school senior who have shown commitment to the sport they participate in, while also excelling in the classroom. Applicants must demonstrate dedication to the community in which they live, as well as act as a role model while participating in their sport. A minimum GPA of 3.75 is required. A $500 scholarship will be awarded to each male and female winner.
Team of the Year
This award goes to a high school varsity team that demonstrates success, not only in terms of wins and losses, but also in the manner by which they are able to work together to achieve a common goal. This team must display good sportsmanship throughout the season and act as role models for their peers, as well as their opponents.
Coach of the Year
This award goes to a high school coach that demonstrates leadership, discipline, and guidance to those he or she coaches, while also maintaining a high level of success in his or her sport(s). This individual must have a good working relationship with fellow coaches and demonstrate a good rapport with the athletes on his or her team. Those qualified for this award may include someone who has lead a team to a state title, coached athletes advancing to the collegiate level, or coached a team that significantly improved, as compared to the previous season.
Male & Female Athlete of the Year
This award honors one male and one female varsity athlete who demonstrate the desire, determination, and self-discipline required for success in athletics. Nominees must have a minimum GPA of 3.2, show statistical leadership, and have been named to an All Conference Team.
Integrity in Leadership for Coaching
This award goes to a high school coach that shows character, integrity, and leadership in and out of the sporting realm. He or she must display dedication to the community and maintain a good working relationship with fellow coaches. Those qualified for this award may include a coach that has an excellent rapport with athletes, one who assists his or her team in organizing benefit events, or a coach who shows commitment to athlete development.
Comeback Athlete of the Year
This award honors a male or female high school athlete who returned from an injury or fought adversity to excel in their sport. This athlete must have experienced a season ending injury or illness, only to show the hard work and determination necessary to return to sport.
Breakthrough Athlete of the Year
This award honors a high school athlete whose individual performance has significantly contributed to the success of his or her team. This individual must show statistical improvement over previous seasons and take on a more integral role with in the team. This might include an underclassman that is now starting on the varsity lineup or someone who is successfully participating in a sport for the first time.
Special Olympian of the Year
This award honors a male or female athlete from Manitowoc County Special Olympics that has shown exceptional leadership, demonstrated teamwork, and shown good sportsmanship, as well as cooperation, with coaches and fellow athletes. Participation in a variety of sports and activities within the agency of Manitowoc County Miracles Special Olympics is also required. A $500 donation to Special Olympics will be awarded in the athlete’s name. Nominations for the Special Olympian of the Year are made through the Manitowoc Miracles.
